What first grabbed my attention about A Bridge Across the Ocean was the book cover. On the cover is a pretty auburn-haired woman in a 1950’s style dress with pearls and candy apple red lipstick. She had this sort of half-smile or smirk, I'm unsure which. Either way, it definitely caught my attention!
The year is 1942 and Margarita Truschenko is a Volksdeutsche, an ethnic German from Poland. With blonde hair, stunning features, and blue eyes, she is the very picture of an Aryan woman.
It is present day Oregon and an elderly widow lives alone. While we are not told her name, we find that she has just recently sold her house and that she is going to be placed in an adult care facility at the behest of her son, Julien.
